With so many reasons why being an EFL teacher is one of the best jobs in the world, we were concerned that after reading our last blog update hundreds of people would quit their jobs in order to start a TEFL course immediately! Well, we just wanted to to reassure you that lots of courses can be done at weekends and even online!
Even so, that will not stop many language lovers wanting to run off straight away into the glorious world of EFL teaching. We thought we’d add a few more sticks to the fire by continuing with our top 10 reasons to become an EFL teacher. So here are 5 more tasty reasons to embark on a TEFL adventure:
6. Money
Although teaching English isn’t the best paid job in the world there is still good money to be made. With so much job satisfaction in TEFL, the money side is not the primary reason people go into TEFL as a career.
That being said, if you take private students you can make good money and the salaries of contract positions can vary enormously depending on where you work and the type of language school you work in. There are lucrative positions out there for EFL teachers – you just need to find them!
7. Multi-media
The use of multi-media in the classroom can really lift the lesson for both the students and the teacher. Using computers alone can make lessons so much more fun and interactive.
This kind of teaching can be great for shy students as their mistakes are noticed by the computer and the teacher rather than in front of the whole class. The use of TV, video and music also make for a more entertaining lesson, so don’t be afraid to turn up the volume and let the singing commence!
There are loads of ways to get into TEFL using multimedia yourself – try out an online TEFL course and study from home at your own pace. Many of these courses also offer practical teaching time so you can practice what you learn in the classroom.
8. Holidays
Depending on where you work, you can get excellent holiday opportunities in TEFL with some positions offering months off at a time.
Many EFL teachers who work in summer schools and some teachers on short contracts might not have long holidays.
However, those in more permanent positions or longer contracts will tend to get their holidays when the kids are off, which in some circumstances can mean the whole of July and August. Happy days!
9. Writing
You get to write cool blogs like this one! You can be certain as an EFL teacher you will have so many funny stories, quirky incidents and other odd goings-on in your life that you won’t be able to resist writing them down.
Whether you write a journal, start a blog or turn your adventures into a novel, life will never be boring and your writing skills will blossom as a result!
10. Independence
As EFL teachers often work to short contracts and often teach privately, this means you are free to up sticks and leave when you feel like a change of location. Teaching at a variety of different schools and varied age groups and academic levels means that your teaching is always kept sharp and interesting.
If you are working as a private tutor of English this is the most freeing of all EFL positions as you choose when to work, how to work and who to work with. The independence of working for oneself is many people’s dream – and it can easily be your reality as an EFL teacher.
Hop aboard the TEFL bus and, although it might be a bumpy ride occasionally, a great sense of freedom awaits!
