Happy Christmas! The festive season is the perfect time to take a look at Christmas vocabulary and put it into context. Although not all EFL students celebrate Christmas, it is still an important cultural holiday for English-speaking countries, so EFL students will benefit from knowing what it’s all about.

Christmas is a really interesting topic with loads of quirky traditions (and we’re not just talking about Uncle Bert’s insistence on charades before the King’s speech!) 7 Tips for EFL Teachers: How to Survive Your First Lesson

 
The first time you stand in front of a classroom full of EFL students can be a daunting experience! All the faces are looking at you, waiting for you to improve their English language skills. That can feel like an enormous responsibility and your first thought might be: quick run! But fear not – you have the skills, the training and the knowledge – you just need to calm down enough to remember it all.

Happy British Sandwich Week!

British Sandwich Week EFL lesson - camembertBritish Sandwich Week begins on 16th May 2021. This event will see all sandwich lovers cutting slices from the wholemeal loaf, washing the rocket and baby tomatoes, layering smoked salmon and spreading the camembert. Now you just need to find the wicker hamper and tartan blanket.

Spring Forward Fall Back - alarm clock

We’ll be losing an hour of sleep soon as we put the clocks forward one hour. That’s right, it’s the start of British summer time! This means lighter afternoons and mornings. The only ‘fly in the ointment’ is the missed hour of sleep on the Saturday night during the change over. Daylight Saving Time means that most of Europe will ‘spring forward fall back’ as we change our clocks. Just make sure you don’t put your clock back one hour by mistake! (more…)

Boris Johnson Wants Immigrants to Learn English by Telephone

Boris Johnson Wants Immigrants to Learn English by TelephoneIs it possible to learn English by telephone? This was an idea put forward by the London mayor’s English Language For All initiative this month in an effort to help immigrants learn English.

Boris Johnson’s report revealed that many immigrants living in London are being denied the opportunity to gain higher paid employment due to their lack of English language skills. Learning English by telephone was proposed as a solution to the problem, alongside learning English using the internet – the latter of course being a great idea! (more…)

Canada Introduces New Language Requirements for Citizenship Applicants

Canada has introduced stricter language requirements for people wanting to obtain Canadian citizenship. Applicants will have to provide evidence of language proficiency in English or French. Right now applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 need to demonstrate informally the ability to speak and understand English or French. But the new guidelines mean that from November this year formal tests will need to be undertaken and objective evidence provided.
